About Professor Paul Gough

‘An ancient and mythical landscape’: painter’s responses to Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck’

Professor Paul Gough is a painter with work in national collections, broadcaster for television and radio, writer, and in 2014 became the Vice Chancellor of Arts University Bournemouth. His many publications include monographs on Stanley Spencer, John and Paul Nash, and the street artist Banksy. His new book, ‘Gilbert Spencer: the Life of a Very English Painter’ will be published by Yale University Press in March 2024.

Paul Gough’s illustrated talk, ‘An ancient and mythical landscape: painter’s responses to Dorset and the Isle of Purbeck’ focuses on two painters drawn back to the Isle of Purbeck year after year: Paul Nash and Gilbert Spencer.
