Here to help

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect so many aspects of our lives, we have had to temporarily close our Day Hospice to ensure the safety of our patients. We are finding other ways to continue to provide face to face expert advice and support to adults in East Dorset and Purbeck living with a life-limiting illness. We will do this by planned group and one-to-one video sessions with our patients.

Patients will be assessed by one of our registered nurses and invited to join a virtual programme of care one day a week. Spaces on the programme will be limited, but you may expect to meet at least six other patients on your day and each session will be hosted by our Day Hospice staff. The aim is to promote a sense of wellbeing and a positive approach to living with a life-limiting illness, as well as providing some much-needed social interaction for those people who are shielding at home.

What to Expect

  • A warm welcome
  • A safe space to share concerns and ask questions
  • Group discussions on a variety of topics
  • Peer support
  • An opportunity for some gentle exercise or relaxation.
  • A private one-to-one consultation with member of the team

Who do I need to be able to take part in these sessions?

You can access our Virtual Day Hospice service by using one of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s tablet devices. You will be given a how-to guide, consent forms to fill in and a member of the nursing team will be able to provide full help and support on how to use this device and join the sessions, which will be held on Microsoft Teams.

Who can come & how do I get referred?

Referrals can be made to this service by your GP, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Community Nursing Team, Social Worker or any other medical professional. We can also take self-referrals but you will be required to give us your consent to contact your GP for further medical information.

If you or someone you know would like to take part in our Virtual Day Hospice Programme, simply contact our Day Hospice team by calling 01202 708470.

Sessions will be Monday to Friday from 10.30am – 12pm

Patients will be allocated a specific day to attend their Virtual Day Hospice sessions.

Drop-in sessions will be on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 2pm – 3.30pm

Will I be charged for this service?

There is no cost to the patient to attend our day hospice but we encourage people to donate however much they can, so that we can keep offering our extraordinary palliative care. As a registered charity, we rely heavily on the local community’s help, support and donations to keep Lewis-Manning Hospice Care running as we only receive 20% funding from the NHS.
