Over the past two months, we have been delighted to welcome Kilian, a student from Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, who joined Lewis-Manning Hospice as part of an Intercultural Project while training to become a teacher.
The project provides students with the opportunity to improve their English, experience a new culture, build confidence and make new connections. In return, our teams benefit from fresh perspectives and cultural exchange.
Kilian made the most of his placement, volunteering over 100 hours across our Boscombe East and Winton shops, supporting our Bournemouth University Pop-Up Shop, and visiting our Poole shop to learn more about charity retail. He also spent time at the hospice, meeting patients attending our 12-week programme, joining a Wellness Wednesday session and taking part in a sound bath led by volunteer Louise.
Kilian quickly became a valued and much-liked member of the team. His enthusiasm, kindness and willingness to get involved made a positive impression on fellow volunteers, staff and patients alike. It has been a privilege to host his placement.
Reflecting on his time with Lewis-Manning, Kilian said:
“Before coming to the UK, I didn’t really understand what hospice care was and had some misconceptions about it. Visiting Lewis-Manning completely changed my perspective. It is such a warm, friendly and positive place where people are supported to live well and enjoy life. I was also surprised by how different charity shops are in the UK compared to Germany and how much they are integrated into the community. One of my favourite experiences was the sound bath at Wellness Wednesday, although I did have to try very hard not to fall asleep! Everyone has been so welcoming, and I will take many happy memories home with me.”
