Volunteer voices – David

Q1) What inspired you to start volunteering?
After taking redundancy from a busy role in investment banking in London, I felt like I was ready for a change. Following a few well-earned holidays, I wanted to rebalance my life and give something back to the community.

Q2) How did you get involved with Lewis-Manning?
A friend who had previously volunteered with Lewis-Manning through a corporate partnership recommended the charity to me. After a few emails and a meeting with Lyndsey to discuss how I could help, I knew I wanted a role that was physical and would get me out and about.

Q3) What volunteering role did you choose?
I began volunteering one day a week as a driver buddy in the retail house clearance team while I was looking for a new job. From my very first morning at the Poole shop, I felt welcomed and supported. Paired with fellow van driver Geoff, I spent my shift rotating stock between the shops, delivering and collecting furniture, and helping with house clearances.

Q4) What was the experience like?
The role was hands-on and often physically demanding—long days, lots of stairs, and some memorable moments (including the infamous staircase at the Winton shop!). But it was also rewarding, sociable, and surprisingly educational. I even picked up a new skill along the way: operating a tail lift. Some days were so active I felt no guilt skipping the gym.

Q5) What did you find most rewarding?
Although I didn’t meet patients directly, delivering furniture to people’s homes was a humbling experience. It gave me a deeper appreciation of my own circumstances and the knowledge that my efforts were helping make someone’s end of life a little more comfortable and dignified.

David’s connection with Lewis-Manning continues, offering to volunteer when he has a gap in his diary and looking forward to getting back out in the Luton van. Thank you, David, for sharing your experiences with us.
