Volunteer Voices – Shop Volunteer

by | Dec 4, 2023 | News, Volunteers | 0 comments

To celebrate International Volunteers Day on Tuesday 5th December, we spoke to Glenn.

Glenn joined as a volunteer in May this year as a volunteer Retail Assistant in our Winton Shop!

We asked Glenn…

What is your reason for volunteering?

I have time on my hands since giving up paid work due to health and chose Lewis-Manning because I was keen to support a local charity. It’s great to see where the money raised by the shops is helping to support local people.

What do you most like about volunteering with Lewis-Manning?

For me it’s the varied tasks that need doing, no two days are the same.  I love sorting the stock from received donations, it’s great to prepare something to look its best and ready for the sales floor.  Again, no two bags are the same and it’s great to find those rare items that we can sell and items that can generate the most value to support the charity’s work.

What do you hope to get out of volunteering?

Just to make a small difference to help the charity support people most in need….. It’s a great feeling to go home everyday feeling that I have helped.

Tell us something about you!

I’ve had a very varied career in retail, selling just about everything from wine to furniture.  I also have experience of working with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, recruitment of people with disabilities and organising events based on disability. I’ve met lots of famous people (most of them nice) working at a large theatre in Leicester although the nicest and most famous person I have met is Miley Cyrus who I randomly bumped into in a park in Glasgow!

What movie or show do you love?

I’m a big fan of British drama, I’ve seen Line of Duty 11 times, Last Tango in Halifax about 7 times and film wise it’s The Shack…I’ve watched that over and over!

What gets you up in the morning?

Usually my four dogs and three chickens but also just looking forward to what the day will bring.
